I will definitely be looking for more from Charlie Cochrane. The author brought two separate historical times to life and intrigued and entertained. When these two find themselves admiring more than one another's spirit and demeanor, when passions erupt between captor and captive, will this new romance survive the arduous trek to Purgatory Mountain?īoth stories were well-written and very enjoyable. The other is a Herculean Yankee captured by the rag-tag Confederate band and forced to become a martyr for all the sins of General Sheridan's fires. One is a war-weary but scholarly Southerner who has seen too much bloodshed, especially the tortures inflicted upon the enemy by his vicious commanding officer, his uncle. I truly loved every bit of this novel, the whole damn book. Mann does write lovely passages - this sits uneasily when it's torture he's writing about, it feels gratuitous in parts to the point of revelry, and the slow burn and self-discovery is what does work for this story very well.
